I met Charlene in 1978 when I was a newly-appointed Circuit Court judge in Eugene. Having been appointed by the governor to this position, I then had to run for election to keep the position. Much to my dismay, another attorney in town also filed to run as well. Having zero experience in politics, let alone running for election, I was in a complete dither. Then along came Charlene.
While presiding over a jury trial one day, I got a note from one of the jurors. In essence it said, when this case is over I am coming to work for you on your election and you had better be ready to work hard! I was completely taken aback. I had no idea who this woman was, aside from a name on a juror roster.
True to her word, as soon as the jury returned a verdict and was discharged, Charlene showed up in my chambers. She introduced herself, told me a bit about her extensive experience in politics, and asked me if I was ready to go to work. There was no way I could have said no.
Thereafter, Charlene dragged me from one end of the county to the other, and back again. She knew everyone worth knowing and made sure I met them. What an adventure!
Long story short, thanks mostly to Charlene, I won in a landslide and never had another opponent for election for the rest of my my 20-year career on the bench.

I met Charlene through Opera Idaho. We volunteered together several times for mailings and other activities and many social gatherings. She was such an interesting person to talk to about our love of Opera and her life and travels. My deepest sympathy to the family.
