Donald Francis Homan

July 10, 1926 ~ September 24, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old
Donald Francis Homan, 91 years of age, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Ashley Manor Memory Care Center surrounded by family. Donald was born on July 10, 1926 to Francis and Elma Homan in Fruitland, ID, the second oldest of five boys. Don graduated from Fruitland High School in 1944 and entered the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the Pacific island of Pohnpei during the end of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
After briefly farming and working construction in Payette County, Don moved to Boise and started his career with the Boise Police Department (”BPD”) in 1951. He retired 31 years later in 1982. After his retirement from BPD, Don served several years as a federal court security officer for the U.S. Marshall’s service in Boise. He never lost his work ethic in retirement. “The thing of it is” he always wanted to stay busy and never shied away from a task because he was too old. He was always looking to pitch in and help out a neighbor. He was an excellent mechanic who knew his way around the cars and trucks of his day. Don was an outdoorsman at heart. He enjoyed hunting and fishing his whole life and possessed volumes of stories about growing up on a farm in Fruitland and shooting birds when the birds were plentiful.
In 1948 Don married his first wife Olajo Ferrell. They were later divorced. In 1964, he married his second wife Rae Jean Doherty in Boise. They were married 42 years until she passed away in 2008. Don is survived by his four children, John (Candy) Homan; Jan (Willie) Brannan; Kevin (Hattie) Homan; Michael Homan; and nine grandchildren. He leaves behind two brothers, Norman (Thelma) Homan of Ft. Collins, CO; and Hugh (Doris) Homan of Troy, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rae Jean; his daughter Debra; and two brothers, Everett Merrill Homan and Marion (Bud) Homan.
Graveside services under the direction of Relyea Funeral Chapel will be held at Dry Creek Cemetery, 9600 Hill Rd.
