Bettie Yvonne Schaeffer, 86, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019, surrounded by her loved ones. Bettie was born on April 10, 1932 in Burley, Idaho. She was one of six children born of LaMar and Lena Anderson. She married Melvin Schaeffer on September 14, 1948 in Burley, Idaho. Bettie and Melvin had eight children and were happily married for almost 52 years until Melvin’s passing in 2000.
Side-by-side, Bettie and Melvin built an extraordinary legacy that will endure for many generations to come. What they lacked in worldly riches they made up for with a wealth of love and laughter. For her part, Bettie was “Grandma” to an astonishing 27 grandchildren and “GG” to so many more. And, with nearly a half-century of practice, she mastered that role. To say that Bettie’s grandchildren adored her would be a massive understatement. With the help of her rapier wit and her infinite charm, Bettie had the uncanny ability to transform tears into laughter.
Bettie lived life to the fullest and left this world revered by those whose lives she touched. She was dedicated to her faith and spent countless hours doing temple and genealogical work. Generations to come will forever be indebted to her for the work she did recording family history and documenting the things that really matter. Although she has passed from this world, and her surviving family now grieve the loss of her light in their lives, they are comforted to know that she has been welcomed into the open and loving arms of Melvin and her daughters whom she’s waited so long to see again.
Bettie is survived by her brother, Larry, three daughters, Pamela, Patricia, and Jennifer, and two sons, Michael and Robert, 25 loving grandchildren, and a countless and ever growing number of great and great-great grandchildren. Bettie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Barbara and Lois, two brothers, K and Kim, three daughters, Victoria, Debra, and Annette, and two grandchildren, David and Timothy.
Bettie’s family would like to thank the Franklin Ward for their assistance with the funeral services and President Brent Belliston for presiding and being a great friend of the family for so many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 2299 N. Five Mile Road. Her family will gather and greet friends at a viewing at 10:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. The dedication of her gravesite will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery and lunch will be served at the church thereafter.
