April 11, 1945 ~ June 8, 2022 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Tribute

David Larry Holt, much loved husband to Elaine, father to Garth, Chad and Suzanne, grandpa to 7, and great-grandpa to one, passed away on June 8, 2022, in Boise, Idaho, of medical complications.

Larry was born on April 11, 1945, in Sacramento, California, to parents Arvil and Jennie Holt. Larry was the younger of their two children.

Larry attended a one-room school at French Creek and Shingle Springs in California until high school. He then attended El Dorado Union High School, graduating in 1963. Larry attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. While attending BYU, Larry made the decision to join the US Air force. Larry served his country proudly for 4 years from 1967 to 1971.

While attending BYU, Larry met and fell in love with the love of his life, Elaine Self. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 30, 1966. They remain dedicated to each other in love for eternity. Larry was a great example of a devoted husband, loving father, grandpa and someone that was always there to help if needed. His acts and values of selflessness, kindness, love and support have been shared with his family and anyone that knew him. These values will live on in and through his children and grandchildren. We are all better people because of Larry.

While in the Air Force, Larry studied Meteorology. After he was discharged from the service, he decided to join the National Weather Service. He moved to Winnemucca, Nevada, where Larry and Elaine met many great lifelong friends. Larry then moved to Boise and worked for the National Weather Service for over 46 years. Larry was responsible for maintaining the climate data network and data collection. Larry loved his job; it gave him the opportunity to be outdoors in the back country. Larry retired from the National Weather Service in 2011.

Larry loved the outdoors lifestyle, passionate about golf, fishing, hunting and four-wheeling; he loved to be in the mountains “playing." He loved watching old western movies. He shared this passion with his children, teaching them all to fish and shoot, and passing on his love of the outdoors. Another passion was for good food, and his great love of taking care of others. No one ever went hungry with Larry around, and he was an outstanding host. Larry loved to cook and discovered a talent for it. According to his grandkids, he made the best pancakes. Even though we all make them the same way as grandpa, it must have been the love he put into them. Everyone that knew his love for BBQ and seasoning,“it was all about the seasoning." He loved to develop new seasonings and became famous among family and friends for his secret steak seasoning. Larry would take great satisfaction from feeding others.

Larry was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a huge supporter of the work done by the Church. During his life, he held many roles within the church, helping to support and serve many that needed his generosity and kindness to help and guide them through periods of their lives where they needed him.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Elaine, son Chad (Lori) Holt, daughter Suzanne (Mark) Phillips, grandchildren, Aria, Chandra, Ryder, Liam, Brianna, Alyssa and Meghan, great-grandchild Asher, and brother Monte (Shirley) Holt. He was preceded in death by his parents Arvil and Jennie Holt and son Garth Holt.
