Don Douglas Owens, 87, of Boise, Idaho, died Saturday, December 21, 2019, of natural causes at St. Alphonsus Hospital with his son and granddaughter by his side.
Don was born April 2, 1932, to Edward and Clois Owens in Filer, Idaho. He had 11 siblings growing up ~ Gwendola, Neil, Glen, Dale, Gladys, Marian, Elaine, and twins Clyde and Cloyde, who preceded him in death. Sister Carla and brother Arlyss are his surviving siblings.
Don graduated high school and enlisted in the Navy during the Korean war. He later met and married Nadeen Shaffer. He joined the Whitney Fire Department and began his family. Don was preceded in death by his parents, 9 siblings, his youngest son James, and daughter-in-law Vicki Owens. He is survived by Donnette, Glenn and his wife Conndra, Matt, and Bart, as well as his daughter-in-law Shannon, who was married to James. He is also survived by his grandchildren ~ Melissa Bliss, Emilee Shriner, Russell Owens, Steffanie Owens, Sarissa Steeves, Skyler Steeves, Jaden Steeves, Kaliegh Steeves, Scotlin Steeves, Zoe Steeves, Sawyer Syeeves, Evolet Silvera-Owens, Kenzie Silvera-Owens, Emberli Stewart, Ashli Young, Alex Stewart, and Iven Stewart. Don also had 5 great-grandkids he loved ~ Gage Steele, whom he called “Shotgun,” Kyle Hodges, Hope Lorenzi, Nicholas McGuire, and Lacy Young.
His boys enjoyed spending time with him at the fire department as well as other part-time jobs, where they learned to work beside him. His hobbies included fishing, rock hounding, and working in the Boise LDS temple. The service will be held on Monday, December 30, 2019, at LDS chapel at 2323 N. Maple Grove Rd., Boise, with the viewing from 10:00-10:45am. (Family prayer from 10:45-11am, when the funeral service will begin.)
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the veterans charities or the Firemen’s Fund Special. Thanks go out the staff of Applewood Assisted Living Center, the crew at St. Al's, and to Susan and Dave Perry for the extended period of care and service they gave to Don, his wife Nadeen, and their daughter Donnette Owens.
