Janette “Jan” L. West, age 65, of Cascade, Idaho, passed away on September 4, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Kuna, Idaho, of natural causes. Jan was born on May 15, 1953, in Ely, Nevada, to Esther Hopkins and George K. Loveless.
Jan grew up in southeastern Idaho and graduated from Soda Springs High School. She earned her BS and first MS (both cum laude) from the University of Utah. She earned her MS in psychology (summa cum laude) from the University of Idaho. Jan worked for the Idaho Youth Ranch for many years until she retired to take care of her husband (Robert “Bob” West) in their new found home in Cascade, Idaho. For six years, Jan served as a volunteer advanced EMT on the Cascade Rural Fire/Rescue and EMS team. She also volunteered at the America Legion in Cascade, working in the kitchen and served as the treasurer and then as the president of the Legion Auxiliary. Jan was on the juvenile justice committee and the grants committee. Jan worked for Tamarack Resort as the security manager for the last five years.
Jan had a love for life, people and community. She lived throughout Idaho and Utah and found Cascade to be the place that she loved and felt like home. Jan had many hobbies, including whitewater rafting and painting, and she could do anything with yarn, wool or fabric. Jan strongly believed that with the right mindset, a person is capable of doing anything.
Jan is survived by her stepdaughter Becky West, daughter Sarah Penny, son-in-law David Penny, grandson Landon West, granddaughter Chloey Caldwell, grandson Carter Caldwell, brother Scott Loveless, sister Jylene McMillen, her life partner Paul Randolph, many nieces and nephews along with a multitude of friends.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob” C. West, her mother Esther H. Stoddard, stepfather Reed Stoddard and father George K. Loveless.
The celebration of Jan’s life will be held Monday, September 17, 2018, 2:00 p.m., at Armstrong Park (511 S. Front St.) next to the American Legion hall in Cascade, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Jan’s name to the American Legion in Cascade, the Cascade Rural Fire Protection District or the Tamarack Resort. Jan was a gracious, loving and self-sacrificing woman who will be truly missed by all.
