Joan Nicholson was born on April 3, 1947, in Boise, Idaho to Carl and Blanche Nicholson. She passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. She was 76 years old.
From a young age, Joan was inspired by her maternal grandmother’s early 20th century hand sewn quilts. They instilled in her lifelong appreciation of anything handmade and a love of fashion, as well as beautiful fabrics, which she collected and treasured. When she was a Design student in Knoxville, TN her final exam was a public exhibition of her original creative designs of kimonos. After graduating from Design school, Joan moved to New York City where she worked in a 5th Avenue showroom and traveled the country for one of the leading handbag designers of the era. This 16-year period in New York City was one of her most rewarding as she so enjoyed the many artistic cultural aspects of the city upon which she thrived. Only when she felt it was her duty to take care of her aging parents, did she return to Boise.
Her favorite designer was Issey Miyake, and it gave her great joy to wear one of his dresses to a party she gave to celebrate her mother’s 90th birthday. Her biggest heartbreak in life was the death of her younger brother, Richard. He was her protector and best friend and she was forever grateful for the special bond they shared. Joan’s church family and deep religious faith gave her great happiness and strength throughout her entire life.
Joan is survived by her sister Claire, brother Tom (who was always by her side, even after her death) and several nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Carl and Blanche, her brothers Carl Jr. and Richard and sister Susan.
Per Joan’s request there will be no funeral service. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Rest in peace, sweet Joanie. We love you and you will be forever in our hearts.
