Tribute

John MacKay Cromarty was born March 27th, 1964 to Robert John and Phyllis Margaret Cromarty. His birthplace was Binghamton, New York. John was the youngest of three children for Robert and Phyllis. His two sisters are Ellen Cromarty and Mary Sees and her husband Steve. John was very proud of his Scottish heritage, often wearing a kilt or a piece of his paternal tartan McKenzie, or his maternal tartan Brodie.

John graduated in 1982 from Vestal High School in New York. He always had a propensity for learning. He especially loved history, specifically WWII subjects. John furthered his education after high school by attending trucking school as well as gunsmithing school. John earned a Master gunsmith degree from Pennsylvania school of Gunsmithing.

John always had a mind for business, and owned several specialty stores in New York. He specialized in survival and tactical stores, but his biggest love was his gunsmithing and sales shop. John continued his love for firearms until his passing. He shared his knowledge with anybody who was willing to listen, and quickly became friends with those he shared with, as well as the ones who shared with him.

John was a man of many hobbies. He had a love for firearms and WWII, and when he combined these two loves, he discovered a love for scale model building. His great attention to detail made him a natural for re-creating WWII battle scenes in the 1/35th scale. John was proud to have several of his models and dioramas on display at hobby stores as well as museums. John was also very proud of the United States military and held them in high regard. As such, John joined the Patriot Guard to make sure that our service members get proper funerals with protection from outside influences.

John moved from the east coast to Idaho in or around 2002. John’s home was always in New York, but the conservative nature of Idaho appealed to him, and he quickly adapted and enjoyed his new home. John often attended gun shows in Idaho, where he seemed to know everybody, and routinely met new people that became new friends. John never knew a stranger.

After moving to Idaho, John met his true love, Louise, in February of 2009. They started dating and were married on May 21st, 2011. Upon marrying Louise, John suddenly had a much larger family. He quickly became step dad to Louise’s five kids, and their spouses. He also became “Papa John” to her eight grandkids. John loved all of them as if they were his own. He was proud to be involved in their lives, and looked forward to family gatherings.

On January 27th, 2019, John received news of a wonderful surprise. John found out that he in fact was a father. He had been in a brief relationship many years earlier, but it had ended and they went their separate ways. After 10+ years of searching, Kaleigh made a breakthrough and was able to contact John. Kaleigh was born October 21st, 1985. She met John for the first time on February 21st, 2019. John was very proud and immediately started telling everyone he knew about his daughter. Kaleigh was married to Matt Casey on May 20th, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York. John gladly attended their wedding, and cherished their father daughter dance. Kaleigh and Matt now reside in Denver, Colorado. Kaleigh and Matt welcomed their first child, John’s first biological grandchild, into this world on October 25th, 2021. Kai Henry Casey was a new sparkle in John’s eye, and he couldn’t wait to share his new grandson with everyone he knew.

John was proud of all that he accomplished, and took great pride in his work. John’s most recent career was a Certified Denture Technician in Caldwell, Idaho. He stayed very busy building, polishing, and aligning client’s dentures. He often beamed when he would say “I’m helping people get their smiles back!” John often put in extra hours to help the clients. John did not have a quit button.

John sadly passed away on June 9th, 2022. He passed away in his home of natural causes. John never wanted a funeral because they were too sad. As a family, we have decided to have a Celebration of Life. Let us remember all that John was and gather together as John’s family and friends to remember him. The Celebration of Life will be held on July 16th, 2022 from 4 to 8pm. This open house will be held at Christ Community Church at 603 Everett St. Caldwell, Id 83605.
