Lloyd Verner McAferty

July 3, 1932 ~ February 17, 2018 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Lloyd (Mac) Verner McAferty passed away on February 17, 2018. Mac was a loving father to 5 children, 18 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. He was born July 3, 1932 in Olympia, WA.

From the time Mac was a boy, he loved airplanes, airports, and flying. He joined the U.S. Air Force after college and was then hired by American Airlines in 1966. He always said he had his dream job! He was a captain until retirement in 1992.

After high school, Mac served a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas-Louisiana mission from 1953-1955. Following his mission, he attended Brigham Young University (BYU) and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Husbandry. He was part of ROTC while attending BYU.

While attending BYU, he met "the most beautiful girl in the world" - Luana Iris Allen. They spent 9 years in the Air Force. Four children were born while in the Air Force - Daniel in McAllen, TX, and Thomas and Sandra in Savanna, GA. Joseph was born in Cape Cod, MA. Mac was hired by American Airlines in 1966, and Janice was born while they were living in Nashville, TN.

Mac moved his young family to Walnut Creek, CA, in 1969, where he was based out of San Francisco, CA. After living in the "city," Mac moved his family to Delhi, CA, to a 20-acre almond ranch. Farming, flying, and family filled Mac's time as well as staying active and serving in the church.

As the family grew, it was decided to move to Turlock, where they lived in the Adobe house on Canal Drive. While in the Turlock Ward, Mac served in the Young Men organization and enjoyed camping and backpacking. He had the opportunity to influence and change the course of the young men's lives for good. All of Mac and Luana's children graduated from Turlock High School. Mac and Luana lived in the Canal Drive house from 1974-1990.

Mac began to anticipate retirement, the children were gone, and Mac and Luana sold their Turlock home and bought 14 acres on Puget Sound in Olympia, WA.

After retirement, Mac and Luana served their first mission together in Talihina, OK, for one year. When they returned from Oklahoma, Mac was called as Bishop of the Olympia 1st Ward. He served faithfully for five years and was dearly loved by all. When he was released as Bishop, Mac and Luana went on a second mission and served one year in San Francisco, CA. When they returned home, they served in the Seattle, WA, temple for eight years, traveling weekly from Olympia to spend Saturday in the temple.

In October 2012, Mac and Luana sold their acreage in Olympia and moved to Meridian, ID, to be near family. Mac brought joy to all who knew him and lived an exemplary life of service to his family, friends, and God.
