Mary Mathai Kallumpurath was born on September 23, 1936, into the Kappil Pookottu family at Omalloor, Kerala, India. Mummy was lovingly called Kunjunjamma. She married Kallumpurath Mathai Mathai on June 7, 1956, and settled in Goregaon, Bombay, India. Papa went to eternal rest on May 30, 1980.
Mummy was a person of great faith who believed in the power of fasting and prayer. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Mar Thoma Church, Goregaon, until she moved to the United States in 1995 to be with her kids. As a key member of the Sevika Sangam, she along with her very dear friends from Goregaon church fasted and prayed every Friday for the needs of the church and the community, including witnessing God’s love to those living in the slums, helping and feeding the less fortunate.
Mummy was a very strong presence and a positive influence in the lives of her four children. She raised all of them and never let them feel a lack of anything. She taught them all to face the fiercest challenges in life with divine strength that comes through prayer.
Mummy is survived by her children Viju and Sonu Mathews (Idaho), Liza and the late Benny Mathew (Washington, D.C.), John and Maya Mathews (California), Susan and Sam John (New York), her grandkids Ashley, Sammy, and Becky Mathews, Christine and Christopher Mathew, Ritu and Mathai Mathews, Stanley and Steven John, and her sister Leelamma Athyal (Thiruvalla).
In 2009, Mummy settled in Boise, Idaho. She travelled every year, until 2019, to spend time with her other children. She loved and always stayed in touch with her relatives, Goregaon church friends, and all her acquaintances. She is now on the glorious shore joined by her predeceased husband, parents, and siblings.
