Mary Kathy Provence (known to family as Kathy) was born in Buffalo, Wyoming on April 26, 1951 to Harold Frank Provence and June Marie Herzog. She had two older siblings at the time: Lester and Joyce Provence. Later, she got a younger sister, Carmen and a brother, Dale. Buffalo was where her four grandparents lived. Kathy enjoyed special attention from her grandparents and loved to visit them.
Kathy’s family moved from cold Wyoming to sunny California when Kathy was nine years old. Because Kathy had developmental delays, she attended special education classes and had trouble mixing with regular kids. Still, her parents treated her affectionately. Kathy eventually graduated from Fremont High School in 1971. She worked in sheltered workshops for local electronic companies placing watchbands into presentation boxes.
Kathy’s parents divorced in 1968 which was a shock to the family. Kathy continued to live with her mother and her mother’s new husband, Dean Andrus. Kathy’s brother, Lester, got married, served in Viet Nam and came home safely. Her two sisters and younger brother also married. Kathy never married nor had any children. Kathy moved to Arizona in the eighties and jointly purchased some desert property with her brother and sister. Kathy lived independently, with Joyce and Dale checking on her regularly. Kathy worked as a laundress or hotel maid. She loved being included in family events involving Dale’s children.
In the nineties, Kathy moved to Boise, Idaho to be near her sister Carmen. Kathy shared an apartment with Louise Hammari for a few years but then moved into a private apartment. Kathy received survivor’s benefits from the state of Nevada since her father’s death in 1975.
Kathy attended church at the Orchard Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boise. She was a member in good standing since her baptism at age 22. She liked to attend the Boise Temple with her younger sister. The bishop assigned her the job of stuffing tithing envelopes. Kathy completed reading the Book of Mormon this year.
Around age 60, Kathy moved into Heatherwood Retirement Community and loved to participate in recreational activities. She went on tours every week and did chair exercises with a group of retirees. She loved eating in the dining room. She paid extra so she could keep her cat, Mittens, with her. She hung her mother’s oil paintings on her walls.
Kathy loved to decorate for most holidays, especially Christmas! Kathy spent months buying gifts for nieces and nephews, siblings and in-laws and wrapping them carefully. She loved to attend birthday parties for her many grand-nieces and nephews. She loved ice cream and cake.
In the past few years, Kathy began feeling weaker. She suffered a number of age-related conditions. At age 70, she was admitted to a skilled nursing facility, Orchards of Cascadia, for hospice services.
Kathy was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, and stepfather. She is survived by her brothers, Lester Provence (Nanci), Dale Provence (Roxanne), sisters, Joyce Provence and Carmen Hammari (Arnold) and many nieces and nephews.
