Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Richard “Rich” Lee Elgan, 49, left us too soon on March 5, 2018. CSM Elgan was born on May 5, 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jess and Nancy Elgan. Rich was a brave and loyal soldier as well as a patient and loving husband, father and grandfather. He married Penny Carter in Preston, Idaho in 1989. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He is survived by his loving wife, Penny Carter Elgan; daughters, Meagan Knight, Cassidy Elgan (Cameren Hencley), Katie and (Brock) Hall and Marci Elgan; his son, Jacob Elgan; three grandchildren, Rex, Paizley, Ryder and grand baby number four due to be born next month; parents, Jess B. and Nancy L. Elgan; brothers, Jeff (Michelle) Elgan and Greg (Diane) Elgan; and sisters, Stephanie (Fred) Houston, Susan (Randy) Buxton and Julie (Steve) Beutler. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jesse and Estella Elgan and Drex and Pearl Tolley. A natural outdoorsman, CSM Elgan loved hunting, fishing, camping, boating, four wheeling, shooting and hiking. Anytime he was outdoors, he was happy. He enjoyed spending time with his family, constantly planning their next adventure. He and Pen were always on the run doing what they loved. Some of their favorite things were an early morning cocoa run and hitting the water in their fishing boat, the trail systems on their side by side, a hike in the hills or just a simple drive. Their favorite spots were in the Owyhees, the Sawtooths and the Frank Church Wilderness area. He was a self-proclaimed comedian; his dry sense of humor kept us all laughing. CSM Elgan enlisted in the Idaho Army National Guard in May 1985. Throughout his 33-year career, he served in multiple assignments and endured two deployments to Iraq. At the time of his passing, he was assigned as the Idaho Army National Guard’s Command Sergeant Major. He was truly a soldier’s CSM. He was passionate about advocating for his soldiers and strongly believed in leading from the front. A viewing will take place Sunday, March 11, 2018, from 5 to 7:00 p.m., at Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 N. Latah St., Boise. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 12, 11:00 a.m., at the LDS Stake Center, 1985 N. Black Cat Rd., Meridian, with a viewing from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
