Elisabeth Martha Sobott

August 12, 1921 ~ March 15, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Elisabeth M. Sobott, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend went to Heavenly Father on March 15, 2017. She was 95 years old. She was born on August 12, 1921 in Weinheim, Germany, to Katharina Eberhard and Erich Vetter. She enjoyed a happy childhood, also in Heppenheim, her mother's birthplace. In 1928, Erich moved his family to Pirna at the Elbe River, where Elisabeth attended school and excelled in academics and sports. Her six aunts (her dad's sisters) spoiled her there, as she admitted. At 16, Elisabeth worked in an orphanage in Gottleuba, taking care of the children. Afterwards she pursued other interests for a while but returned to the orphanage because she missed the children. During WWII she was required to work for the compulsory work service as a youth leader, taking care of a group of teenage girls, who she loved very much. Toward the end of the war, when the Russian army approached their area, Elisabeth, with determination, told the girls to go home to their families, - even though this was against the Reich's regulations - thus saving the lives of "her" girls and risking her own in this selfless act.
Elisabeth married Heiner Sobott in 1946. They were blessed with three children, Bernd in 1948, Birgit in 1951 and Barbara in 1956. After the marriage was dissolved in 1960, Elisabeth became " a very engaged, loving and respected school teacher" (quote by some of her contemporaries). She provided well for her children, with her mother Katharina by her side, so her children could enjoy good schools and fun vacations.
Her favorite hobby was travelling, which was instilled by her father who taught in word and action that travelling educates. She visited many countries in her life, including, Iceland, Italy, Ghana, Israel, and many times the USA, and after 84 years in Germany, she spent the last eleven years of her life in Idaho and Utah with her daughter Birgit McCracken. Through her father she also developed a great love for music. Her mother taught her among many other things, patience and love for flowers. Another pastime was singing for many years in her church's choir. However, her favorite choir is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and she enjoyed a few live performances.
Her heart always went out to children, especially in her own family. When her youngest daughter passed on, leaving eight beautiful children without a mother, Elisabeth helped and guided them for many years. She also was involved in various volunteer positions helping, fundraising for, and tutoring exploited children throughout the world. After she retired, she continued also serving the Catholic Teachers Organization in her district, scheduling events, overseeing its finances and reaching out to teachers in need of comfort.
At age 85, (keeping her happy memories of her former church in her heart), Elisabeth decided to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loves her eternal family! Elisabeth devoted her life to her family, and was a proud grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Eberhard Vetter, by her former husband (who always stated his love for her) and by two of her children, Bernd Sobott and Barbara Sobott Hansen Sackey.
Her strong loving spirit, her captivating smile, her welcoming and concern for children, and always her love for our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ were shining through all her trials and challenges.
Elisabeth's Motto: "Children Are The Best Of The World!"
Mutti (Mom), No one can take your place!
Thank you to all who have shown love to her!
